In recent weeks, several car accidents have occurred in and around Pittsburgh, which local law enforcement authorities have largely attributed to ice, snow, and other dangerous road conditions caused by winter weather. These motor vehicle accidents are a good reminder that even the best, most careful drivers are easily felled by snow and ice, and that we all could use a refresher on safe winter driving.
First, according to the Pennsylvania State Police, it is important to ensure that your car is in good working order. Have your tires, fluids and windshield wipers checked, and stay current on routine maintenance. In addition, you should keep an emergency kit in your vehicle containing an ice scraper, snow brush and shovel, and jumper cables and a tow chain.
You should also carry a blanket, gloves and boots to keep you warm if you become stranded, as well as food and water, a first aid kit, a flashlight and extra batteries and a cell phone charger.
Second, make sure you are driving for the current road conditions. Accelerate more slowly and drive at a slower speed, especially when approaching intersections, off-ramps or bridges. Use your headlights at all times and leave extra room between your car and other vehicles on the road. This is especially true for large trucks and snowplows, which take longer to stop.
Don't use your cruise control or overdrive in slick conditions, and remember that four- and all-wheel drive will not help you to steer or stop better when the roads are icy.

As drivers, you need to be prepared at all times while traveling to ensure that everyone on board a safe trip. The things that were mentioned above would be very helpful in case unexpected circumstances would arise.
